THE PERFECT LATERALS - SHOULDER IN (30 MINS Aprox)
This half hour but intensely packed tape is all about understanding the basic principles of shoulder-in, that first great bending and collecting exercise for the horse. Using ordinary horses and riders. Sylvia shows why riders often experience problems with this movement and how to ride it correctly. (HORSE AND RIDER, January 2001) plus feedback from their Readership..... 'I had never been able to master the shoulder-in before. Too often my horse was offering neck in and my trainer would shout "your're still on two tracks!" The trouble is, the more I tried, the more I seemed to twist my mare's head round and throw her onto the opposite shoulder. Yet this exercise was supposed to be about lightness of the shoulders! To make a confession - I've now chucked my trainer, she never did tell me how to do it anyway - only when I wasn't - and I now concentrate on listening to my horse, reading good articles and books and watching videos which have set me on the right track. What I loved about this video was it actually showed me HOW to take my mare's shoulders off the track, HOW to get her to bend through the girth - before I simply lost the quarters - and HOW to keep the angle I wanted to make. The video also makes clear all those difficult things like three and four track, what to do to the outside of the horse - do you ever hear trainers tell you that? - other than 'more leg'!!!!... and we clearly see the effects of the outside hip and thigh in this really clear and explicit video. So, thank you Sylvia for producing the Perfect Lateral series, I can't wait for the next one, and in the meantime my dressage points have soared now that the judges no longer write 'no shoulder-in shown' on my test sheets!
